Shelly Wood
Plane Tree founder and director. After graduating with an arts degree, Shelly facilitated community arts projects and worked in mental health settings. She later went into teaching and specialised in SEND. She is qualified as a specialist leader of education (SLE) and for 12 years worked at 5-19 academy for pupils with complex needs and learning difficulties where she became head of Upper School. The frustration of seeing pupils leave special education with limited prospects and often immediately overlooked by employers, has led to her departure from teaching and the development of the Plane Tree Independent CIC.

Mel Kirk
Behind the scenes of the organisation lies the drive and unique skill set of Mel Kirk. Mel worked alongside Shelly for many years, shaping the vocational offer within a local special school. While Mel continues her role as the vocational lead at the academy, from the very beginning, she has volunteered her time and expertise to ensure that The Plane Tree fulfils its purpose.
